PLAYLIST 14 is

Turntable 14

77% VINYL FRIENDLY.  Not bad.

Lyric of Playlist 14:

The two lines prior give the game away, so…

Your limitations are our every care. Every breath you breath belongs to someone there.

Tracks marked * have been given a tiny (or sometimes, slightly bigger) 41 Rooms ‘tweak’/edit/whatever.

(Intro) THE FLAMINGOS – Stars (Edit) – Unreleased demo – 1983

Episode #1 for info.

00.41

NEW ORDER – Confusion (Dimitri Remix) – Volume, v/a CD – Volume – 1989

Also variously on vinyl but this a rare 41 Rooms plug for the CD version. The late Rob Deacon’s Volume compilations – full of previously unreleased tracks and alternative mixes – came packed with a booklet that could stop a tank. Years before, I had often bumped into Rob at early/mid eighties London gigs – firstly Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, if I remember rightly, but later at more industrial type night outs, as he fashioned his Abstract and Sweatbox labels. Back on New Order, this was a mix that captured the era.

New Order - Confusion (Dimitri Remix)

05.21

THE BELOVED – Sun Rising – 7″ – WEA – 1989

The track that finally charted the band, looking back, it has the feel of a ‘come down’ track… not that I’d know anything about that. No, really, I’d know nothing about that. And raving… I didn’t do that, either. Jon Marsh’s distinctive approach to his vocals a major selling point, I’d say.

The Beloved - Sun Rising

10.01

SOUL FAMILY SENSATION – Perfect Life (Orinocco Flow mix) – 12″ – One Little Indian- 1991

One album… and they were gone.

Soul Family Sensation - Perfect Life (Orinocco Flow Mix)

13.13

FROU FROU – Must Be Dreaming – Details, CD only – Island – 2002

One of the early Brit School successes, Imogen Heap here in a shortlived project just before her solo career took a major upward turn.

Frou Frou - Must Be Dreaming

17.01

ALLEZ ALLEZ – She’s Stirring Up – 7″ – Scalp – 1981

The metamorphosis from Marine to Allez Allez was speedy, and such that although they were billed as Marine, I was actually watching very early Allez Allez at Heaven (London) in July ’81 – a gig I seemingly didn’t record. Might have to check that at some point.  Their original recordings aren’t hard to find but good to see their short catalogue rereleased on vinyl in 2008.

Allez Allez - She's Stirring Up

Marine (early Allez Allez): Heaven, London, 13.7.81. Very murky. Apologies.

Marine (Allez Allez) - She's Stirring Up (41 Rooms)

Masterbag – 17.9.82

Allez Allez Masterbag #17, 9.82 (Pt 1)

Allez Allez Masterbag #17, 9.82 (Pt 2)

20.37

LAURA VANE AND THE VIPERTONES – Roof Off – Self-titled LP – Unique – 2009

Thumping. Visual is of the 12″.

Laura Vane and the Vipertones - Roof Off

23.25

!!! (Chk Chk Chk) – Dear Can – Louden Up Now, LP – Warp – 2004

You’ve got to wonder at the name… but seeing as early on they signed to Warp, that might well have been part of the appeal. Someone in this band must have liked A Certain Ratio.

!!! (Chk Chk Chk)

26.32

DUCHESS SAYS – Rabies (Babies Got The) – Begging The Three T’s, 10″ – Back Yard recordings – 2009

A proper modern day rendition of post punk. ‘Created in late 2003 by four influent (sic) members of the Church of Budgerigars who decided to collaborate together in a common musical project. Their goal was to insure a faithful representation of the message of the Duchess (or spiritual budgie) through a precise artistic dialog.Bandcamp. Quite. They’ll be back here.

Duchess Says - Rabies

31.00

MR PARTRIDGE – The Rotary – Take Away / The Lure Of Salvage, LP – Virgin – 1980

To my ears, there’s something (maybe a few things, actually) genuinely unsettling about this piece of music. A fave of my late good mate, Alan Johnston (RIP), he certainly spun this on the decks at Winkles in 1981.

Mr Partridge - The Rotary

34.14

TWINKRANES – Double Negative (Soundcloud Version)

Dublin based, but with definite prog/kraut rock leanings. Fab.

Twinkranes - Double Negative (Soundcloud)

39.09

GLOBO – Bombast * – This Nation’s Saving Grace, CD only – Comuse Recordings – 2008

The album being a complete cover of a Fall album…

Globo - Bombast

42.49

COBRA KILLER – Goodtime Girl – Uppers & Downers, LP – Monika Enterprise – 2009

The German duo here caught NOT in the Liverpool Cavern in the early 60s, but Leipzig in the late noughties. I only happened on them about three years ago, but theatre was very much a part of their thing.

Cobra Killer - Good Time Girl

46.37

POMPLAMOOSE – The Internet Is Awesome – Digital only

Recorded live in one take ⬇︎⬇︎⬇︎⬇︎⬇︎… as can be seen on Youtooob.

Pomplamoose - The Internet Is Awesome

49.27

ROBERT WYATT – At Last I Am Free – Nothing Can Stop Us, LP – Rough Trade – 1982

In this instance, Wyatt covering Chic says more about the latter, the song being a bit removed from the Edwards/Rodgers’ catalogue of disco-funktastic hits.

Robert Wyatt - At Last I Am Free

53.23

FAUN FABLES – Eyes Of A Bird – Family Album, CD only – Drag City – 2004

Fine folk for the folks.

Faun Fables - Eyes Of A Bird

THREE  FROM LARRY HEARD.

The idea to big up Larry Heard on 41 Rooms was in my head way before Show 1… but I wouldn’t have put money on this three track combo being the outcome. They just felt right at this point but more from him some other time, without a doubt.

If house music has grabbed you at any point then head to the Red Bull Academy’s Larry’s interview with him here.

57.58

THE IT – Rain Forest Serenade – 12″ – Big Life/Market Records – 1990

Rainforest Serenade (Long Version) (Big Life/Black Market BCK 4T) – Larry Heard’s terrific subtle infectious steadily undulating 107.1bpm piano plinked uncrushed cool gentle jiggly 10minute groove is muttered and crooned by co-composer Harri Dennis) with a jazzy organ accented central break, plus an equally good shorter all instrumental Dub and an odd jerkily tapping vocal edit.James Hamilton, Jocks, 10.90

The It - Rain Forest SerenadeBlack

01.02.54

LARRY HEARD PRESENTS MR. WHITE – You Rock Me – 12″ – Alleviated – 2006

Simple and uncluttered, there’s nothing wildly groundbreaking here… but it’s just sooooo right.

Larry Heard Present Mr White

01.06.43

MR. FINGERS – On My Way (Radio Mix) – MCA – 1992

Under one of Heard’s more famous post Fingers Inc monikers, I fathomed the mix after I’d recorded the show.

Mr Fingers - On My Way (Radio Mix)

Straight No Chaser, Vol 2, #24, Spring ’03

Larry Heard (Straight No Chaser, Vol 2 #24, Spring '03

01.10.43

MIJA – Need That Fun At Home (Danny {Tenaglia’s} Fun At Home Mix) – 12″ – Maxi – 1995

Tougher, ‘fatter’ house than the above, but indicative of – for me – house music’s early 90s golden era. It’s unclear what Tenaglia remixed, as no original of the track seemed to have been released. A minor note.

Mija - Need That Fun At Home (Danny Tenaglia's Mix)

01.14.40

BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT- How To Make A Heart – Make Me Believe In Hope, LP – The Blue Team, Aztec Records – 2012

I’ve been a big fan of Rod Thomas since he was, well… Rod Thomas, and us Got-Ta-Scatta boys remixed an early single of his. It didn’t get used. There were a few years and singles before he had a style and image rethink and the real jumpstart his career – the not insignificant intervention of one Elton John. A bit Erasure and Pet Shop Boys, he’s been going through a late 80s/early 90s house phase in more recent times, the man is always full of melody.

Bright Light Bright Light - How To Make A Heart

01.18.20

AMERICA – A Horse With No Name – 7″ – Warner Brothers – 1971

Elton John again. After having given my dad 50p to buy me Elton’s Your Song 7″ (1970), this America single, plus Chairman Of The Board’s Everything Is Tuesday and (ahem) Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Underneath The Blanket Go (!) became the first singles I ever bought myself. The sound of America was very much the sound of sunny California… although they formed in London.

America - A Horse With No Name

America - A Horse With No Name

01.22.20

NEIL YOUNG – Birds – After The Gold Rush, LP – Reprise – 1970

Folk rock royalty.

Neil Young - Birds

01.24.32

TIM BUCKLEY – Sweet Surrender – Greetings From L.A, LP – Warner Brothers – 1972

In 1981 a school mate of New Order’s Steve Morris suggested I should listen to Tim Buckley – and I did. A good move. Thanks and greetings to Simon Shepherd, wherever he is these days.

Tim Buckley - Sweet Surrender

01.30.56

BETH HIRSCH – P-Town Rubies – 12″EP – Dorado – 1999

A favourite vox of mine and I’d suggest a ‘signature’ voice, Beth came to the fore via Air’s platinum selling debut album, Moon Safari and has released her own material and guested regularly since – the collaboration with D*Note providing some particularly cool stuff.

Beth Hirsch - P-Town Rubies

01.34.06

LUC VAN ACKER AND ANNA DOMINO – Zanna – 12″ – Wax Trax! – 1984

Although this won’t now make any ‘Winkles in 1984’ playlist (because it’s here) it maybe should have. A cute but simple track its three minutes most probably didn’t warrant a 12″. EMI Holland quite rightly thought it had some potential because they licensed it and released a 7″ in 1985, sadly, to no avail.

Luc Van Acker - Zanna

01.37.10

NAKED LUNCH – Slipping Again * – 7″ B-side – Ramkup Records – 1981

Water damaged years ago… but I quite like the effect, if not the depreciation in value. Whoever decided that constant squeek needed to stay in should have been given a good talking to. Oiling the drum machine or sequencer wouldn’t have done the trick, I guess.

Naked Lunch - Slipping Again

01.40.50

THE ASSOCIATES – Club Country – 7″ – Associates – 1982

Billy M’s performance of Club Country on Top Of The Pops was one of the more camper (camperer?) you’d have seen on the show.

The Associates - Club Country

01.44.49

THE PIZZICATO FIVE – Twiggy Twiggy – Made In USA, comp LP – Matador – 1994

Yikes, this crew knocked out some stuff in their sixteen year existence between 1985 and 2001. An album (sometimes two) nearly every year – something to go digging in at a later date, I think. Twiggy Twiggy? Sounding like some madcap twist on 1960s James Bond. Lyrically, I’ve no idea.

Pizzicato Five - Twiggy Twiggy

01.48.41

THE WOODENTOPS – Move Me – 7″ – Rough Trade – 1985

A bit of rockabilly folk or…

‘The Woodentops – Move Me (Rough Trade RT{T}165) A sense of artificially-induced excitement is evident of the Rough Trade debut of The Woodentops’ Move Me, a high-octane drum-driven skiffle, as attractive as it is ambitious. Sort of updating the Velvets of What Goes On with correct detail (fine by me!) and exhibiting singer/writer Rolo’s classic r’n’r pillow-talk vocals (cf. Lou Reed, Alan Vega). Promising, if a bit forced.’ Richard Boon, The Catalogue #25, Apr ’85.

THe Woodentops - Move Me

01.51.39

OUTKAST – Speedballin’ (Devil Blow…) – Lara Croft: Tomb raider – Music From The Motion picture, CD Only – Elektra – 2001

Blistering stuff, and the ending should have been built on to run for minutes more 🙂

Outkast - Speedballin'

01.56.06

MAU / MAGNUS ÖSTERGREN – 11.11.11.11.11 – Unreleased

The Stockholm producer put this on Soundcloud a few years back but then it disappeared, and I couldn’t find it there – on indeed anywhere – else after that. You’re welcome. 🙂

Tumbleweed

Winkles 1981 Pt 4, definitely show #15.
