Two hours of post punk and other newer/older beats and nonsense, uploaded first Sunday of every month

Episode 135 – Original Upload 5.1.25

Counting an acetate as vinyl (of sorts), this playlist is 97% vinyl friendly. Soooo close!

Turntable 135 (Turntable Transrotor Leonardo Doppio 25 25 40 Rega)

Oi! Shelves is for vinyl, numptie! I can see right through it! It’s a Turntable Transrotor Leonardo Doppio 25 25 40 Rega and it’s yours for €3500 or Best Offer right now on eBay.

Any track marked * has been given either a tiny or a slightly larger 41 Rooms tweak/edit/chop and the occasional tune might sound a bit dodgy, quality-wise. On top of that, the switch between different decades and production values never helps in the mix here. 🙂

Lyric of Playlist 135

There’s a man with a gun over there. Telling me I got to beware… ‘ The gun and Stills’ lyric both loaded.

NEW ORDER – Evil Dust (2024 Remaster) – Brotherhood, Definitive Edition box set – Warner Music – 2024

Yep, indeed included on the latest in the line of New Order Definitive Edition boxset beasts but this in house remix (the band’s own, I’m assuming) of Angel Dust originally crept out only as an extra on the 1985 PAL format, UK 5″ C(ompact)D(isc)V(ideo) (phew) of True Faith (the Remix 12 Inch), with the samples (David Byrne and Brian Eno’s tunes, Regiment and The Carrier) more upfront in replacing Barney’s lead vocal.

And again while we’re here in New Order land. Below: Another photo of Dave Simpson (The Guardian) MC’ing myself, Jon Wozencroft and The Beloved’s Jon Marsh (he’ll be back this show) on stage at London’s Rough Trade East last November reminiscing around my recent From Heaven to Heaven – New Order Live, The Early Years (1981-1984) At Close Quarters republication.

CABARET VOLTAIRE – Kino – Drinking Gasoline, 2×12″ EP – Virgin – 1985

Industrial… funk… electronic… heavyweights

MARIE DAVIDSON – Sexy Clown – City Of Clowns, LP – Deewee – 2025

Within a Limited Edition Transparent vinyl LP, some minimal wave bizniz underpinning dry spoken word, and like a multitude of tunes in the modern age purporting to inhabit Edgy Town, using melodies (here it’s the chorus) that sound as if they’re chasing the 10yr-olds demographic. 🙂 Discuss… no, don’t.

CORAL WAY CHIEFS – Release Myself (13th Ave Mix) – 12″ – Murk Records – 1992

This is a label that just keeps getting better. Their fifth release has a male vocal laid over the ever classic deep Purk-y bass sounds – this one’s a must‘. – CJ Mackintosh, Record Mirror (Music Week), 3.10.92

I reckon you can’t go wrong with an early Murk Recs 12″.

FINGERS INC. (feat ROBERT OWENS) – Mystery Of Love (Club Mix) – 12″ EP – D. J. International Records – 1986

Stark early house with Larry Heard at the controls, that I didn’t hear until the early ’90s.

Within the grooves of the ‘Exclusive Sea Blue coloured heavy weight vinyl‘ (in gatefold sleeve, Including accompanying booklet and limited to 250 units – Bandcamp is the place). It’s a ‘builder’… and that end high note? Doooof!

EYELESS IN GAZA – You Are Grace – Butterfly Attitude, 12″ EP – Downwards – 2012

It feels like I missed this beauty first time around, which given it’s EIG/Marty Bates it was very shoddy on my part. So, my recently bought copy is currently awaiting my next UK visit. This Brexit crap makes buying anything from the UK heading overseas an absolute pain in the purse.

JAKI WHITREN – Oh Little Boy – Raw But Tender, LP – Epic – 1973

For some strange reason I only ever visited Croydon’s much remembered second hand record store, Beanos once. As it was a massive set up, I got there at opening time… spent a lot of hours digging… and weirdly, came out with just one record… the above album.

PORRIDGE RADIO – God Of Everything Else * – Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me, LP – Secretly Canadian – 2024

Out of Brighton, UK and the vehicle of Dana Margolin. The longest track title of the show, coupled with the most disconcerting track ending. I have personally been involved in ending a track quirkily but this one just doesn’t sound ‘right’.

THE BELOVED – Spirit – Conscience, LP – East West – 1993

Originally released in 1993, Conscience went Gold in reaching no. 2 in the UK album chart but pictured here is the 180g, white double vinyl, late 2024 re-release through New State Music. ‘Remastered from the original analogue studio masters (by John Davis at Metropolis Studios) boasting louder and clearer audio than the original release‘. Within the limited edition run of 700 copies, 100 via Bandcamp included a postcard of the cover art signed by Jon Marsh.

TOWA TEI – Luv Connection (The Angel Remix) – 12″ promo – Elektra – 1995

Towa Tei is the keyboard and computer programmer of Deee-Lite and this cut is taken from his LP Future Listening – a blend of everything from boss to hip hop, salsa to soul. Luv Connection covers all these styles in an assortment of mixes, embellished for the dancefloor by Maurice Joshua in a spirited house style and Masters At Work in a more avant garde dub house concotion. The female lead vocal is uncredited, but brings a cool soul flavour to the plodding LP version, and a jazzy air to the off-the-wall and brilliant big band boss style Angel Remix‘. **** Ralph Tee, Record Mirror (Music Week), 19.8.95

No less than nine mixes accompany this two 12-inch release from the Deee-Lite man. They vary from the slamming, soulful hip hop beats of Towa’s own refreshing mixes to Height 611’s hard house version, Masters At Work’s Brand New Heaveies-style groove, Georgie Porgie’s piano-let house stormer and The Angel’s Jazzy Jam. There’s also a drum and bass heavy mix of Technova by Smith & Mighty and a Building Groove mix of the same track, by man of the moment Josh Wink, which is typically acidic and pounding‘. – Brad Beatnik, Record Mirror (Music Week), 4.11.95

Part number.… I don’t know how many, of 41 Rooms’ I Don’t Do Jazz… But… ‘ but back in the day, I heard the Angel Remix of the track first and subsequently felt zero affinity with any of the song’s main/lead mix(es) I then heard. Let’s face it, it’s not the greatest set of lyrics but at least this track gives them a cool backdrop.

ESTHER PHILLIPS – Just Say Goodbye – 7″ – Atlantic – 1965

The song’s mid ’60s release as a 7″ b-side(!) in both the US and the UK are well beyond me, so this split release 7 from 2000 will do. Bought on hearing a dealer playing it at a London record fair in the Noughties, it’s no wonder the track has gravitated through the years to have a life of its own.

DEE EDWARDS – Why Can’t There Be Love – 7″ – GM – 1971

Never a hit first time around, Edwards passed away in 2006 and didn’t live to enjoy the kudos (at least) when the song hit pay dirt for the publishers in a heavyweight 2010 Adidas Originals ad.

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD – For What It’s Worth (Stop, Hey That’s That Sound) – 7″ – Atco – 1966

Often considered an anti-war song, Stephen Stills was inspired to write the song because of the Sunset Strip curfew riots in Los Angeles in November 1966, a series of early counterculture-era clashes that took place between police and young people on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California, the same year Buffalo Springfield had become the house band at the Whisky a Go Go.’ – Wikipedia

DAVID CROSBY & STEPHEN STILLS – Long Time Gone (1968 demo) – Demos, LP – Atlantic – 2009

The album pulling together demos from the C. S. & N. camp, both solo and together in various combinations, with Long Time Gone a lot ‘earthier’ than the version to which we would later become accustomed to.

NAFFI – D’ya Hear Me! (Original Version) – 7″ – Rum – 1981

Three decades later it would be iD’d as the Original Version when included on the Brenda Ray (it’s her) 2012 compilation LP, D’Ya Hear Me! : Naffi Years, 1979-83 but she masqueraded as Polly Rithm on the above 7″. Definitely sounding of its time, with a bit of a Marine Girls feel (and maybe others I can’t think of right now) and it took a Japanese label to release the compilation.

SKIN SIDE OUT – The Shredding Of The Skin – 7″ b-side track – Lost Moment Records – 1984

A big Bedford mates connection on this frantic, bustling tune, with the band’s engine room of guitar, bass and drums – Mike Wallis {RIP}, Jem Noble and Andy Mackechnie, respectively – all resident there back then.

T. REX – Children Of The Revolution – 7″ – T. Rex – 1972

She won’t see this but a nod goes out to ex-girlfriend, Gill Hulatt (as was) and one of what would have seemed like millions of girls who adored Marc Bolan back in his whirlwind years. Her and I later saw T. Rex on their Futuristic Dragon tour, at St. Albans City Hall in Feb ’76 and although Bolan’s fame factor was then in decline and his audience had shrunk in size he gave like he was back a few years and in front of 10,000 at Wembley Empire Pool. As some sort of social history link I nearly included a photo here of Gill and I partying in our ‘exuberant youth’, sometime around the time of the St. Albans gig but opted against. Maybe some other time. 🙂

STEVIE WONDER – Superstition (UK acetate) – one-sided 7″ – Emidisc

I happened on this 7″ acetate on line by chance and it won’t be hard to work out why it flew under the radar. I can only assume the seller either didn’t have a turntable to hand to glean some(any?) extra info or did spin it and still didn’t realise it was indeed Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. Listed as a £25 Buy Now I took a punt, on the visual alone. 🙂 Exactly the same mix as the released single version but missing (crucially?) the hi hat that somebody rightly felt gave the track slightly more ‘swing’.

FINGATHING – Dogs – G, LP – ?? – 2025

‘Shipping out on or around January 17, 2025’ – Bandcamp

Fingathing’s personnel – classically trained double bass player, Sneaky (aka Simon Houghton) and DJ/turntablist, Peter Parker – have seperately featured on 41 Rooms before, so it’s not great leap to this tune, and if I was still DJ’ing and in some alternative club I’d have a stab at mixing it in and out of Adrian Sherwood’s remix of Einstürzende Neubauten’s Yü-Gung… as you do… or… as nobody else ever likely would. 🙂

JOSE FELICIANO – Virgo – 7″ b-side – RCA – 1974

Not widely known for his electric guitar leanings but Jose can ‘rock’ out with the best of them – something that seems to constantly surprise the ears of Youtube comment(ator)s when they happen on his version of (say) Purpe Haze from a live show. To get Virgo on 7″ you’re going to have to fork out quite a bit more than average prices for his vinyl catalogue, as it’s only ever found (in the nine territories that I know pressed the single) on the flip side of the much sought after Golden Lady, Jose’s uptempo and Latin’esque take on the Stevie Wonder tune. A cheaper alternative is the And The Feeling’s Good album on which both tunes feature.

And when you get into collecting particular artists – especially those on major labels in the ’60s-’70s halcyon years of vinyl – it… is… never… ending.

TURNTABLE ORCHESTRATION – You’re Gonna Miss Me (12″ Version) * – 12″ – Music Village Records – 1988

A piano-led, Latino jazz romp through some similar territory and roots… lifted from the label’s NY Garage double LP, doubtless due to its accessibility, danceability and general all-round pop sensibility. A classic tale of love betrayed and betrayal repaid (yep! a real song – surely a sign of thangs to come) which should work as well on radio as on the floor. A classy ‘n’ classic ‘spic hit pick‘. – Richard Boon, The Catalogue #66, Jan ’89

Hippie Torales & Paul Scott co-created Excellent subtle piano nagged and mournfully droned unhurried 115 1/2bpm burbling jitterer with a ‘phonecall halfway from Anna Quiñones, now finally out here commercially (in four mixes) and – as a total stranger standing next to me in a sandwich bar said when it came on the radio – “THE club dance hit of 1989” ‘ – James Hamilton, Jocks, 2.89

With its unusual staccato-like vocal phrasing maybe part of its appeal (though I took out the phonecall bridge, as it just sounded… pants), The Turntable Orchestra will have come to the attention of a lot of the late ’80s post punk crowd via Snub TV, an offshoot of the then indie music’s trade magazine and Rough Trade published The Catalogue, whose editors Richard Boon and Brenda Kelly I got to know well during the time our Rorschach Testing label had a P&D deal with RT and I was getting label news included in the mag. It’s also Brenda’s voice that narrated Snub TV. Check out at some point the edition on Youtube that features this track. In fact, check out all the editions. It’s a neat barometer of the then indie scene mixing with the growing dance culture of the time.

THE SONGSTRESS – See Line Woman (See Line Vocal) * – 12″ – Ibadan – 1997

In reality, Nina Simone’s vocal over a Kerri Chandler construction, though in not having been the writer or (in turn) the publisher of her original recording it is possible Ms Simone had no say in the proceedings. I hope she got to gain somehow before her passing just six years later.
