Vocalist, Hazel Martin with a croon of a voice both drifting and blasting over a driving beat, with the tune only ever found on the band’s one and only album, 1967’s Would You Believe until Outta Sight shrewdly licensed the belter for a 7″ single five plus decades later, saving the northern soul brigade the few hundred quid any original 7″ of the time would now have cost.… if there’d been one.

BONNIE DOBSON – Morning Dew – Self-Titled LP – RCA – 1969

‘… a dialogue between the last man and woman left alive following an apocalyptic catastrophe. Dobson stated that the inspiration for Morning Dew was the film On The Beach, which is about the survivors of virtual global annihilation by nuclear holocaust. Dobson wrote the song while staying with a friend in Los Angeles; she recalled how the guests at her friend’s apartment were speculating about a nuclear war’s aftermath and “after everyone went to bed, I sat up and suddenly I just started writing this song [although] I had never written [a song] in my life.” ‘ – Wikipedia

A good few years on from the song’s recorded debut – 1962’s Live at (Gerdes) Folk City – Dobson’s song had been covered by a few and all the way up to a 2013 Royal Festival Hall ‘Celebration of Bert Jansch‘ concert, where Robert Plant introduced Dobson onstage to perform the song, it’s been hailed a bit of a classic. This is the fourth version to grace 41 Rooms, with all the other three having sadly given Tim Rose a dubious co-writer’s credit. That though may have been down to slightly sloppy publisher research.

With William Orbit (RIP) producing Orton’s Japan and CD only debut album, I bought (into) the John Martyn cover when the Virgin and Guerilla labels in the UK had the duo quickly title themselves Spill for a shortened version and various remixes. So, here at least is the UK 7″ sleeve. 🙂

It was a safe bet the band would at some point break from their totally instrumental slant and this album – 500 only, black ‘splatter variant’ vinyl copies, upcoming in November – leads with this slightly retro, slinky and loping funky thing, with British multi-cultural artist, Ahmed ‘Sinkane’ Abdullahi Gallab providing the vocals.

I think it was this gig that with zero previous experience and just five minutes notice and a minute’s ‘training’ Aubergines, front man, Phil Wright collared me to do the sound for his band’s set. In an ideal 41 Rooms world, seeing as both were recorded in vaguely the same timeframe, this might have followed Dominique Guiot’s Les Pingouins S’amusent on show 65 in March 2019 but this Cowley double album of previously unreleased tracks only surfaced that year and I hadn’t heard it. 🙂

Another slight cheat on the visuals front, as I’ve gone for the 7″ I bought in 1976 but it’s the album version on the show. Given what else I was listening to and buying back then a prog rock single wasn’t a common buy for me. I heard the track on the radio, so it was maybe Tommy Vance’s Saturday afternoon Radio 1 rock show. Even with any free play slots granted to the station’s weekday DJs I couldn’t see this getting an airing.

Intro’ing with a two note motif that seems to trip and fall into the track (who’s wired like that? 🙂 ) and then a haunting voice I was convinced would lead to … well, a lead vocal… but it never does. Maybe that’s why it grabbed me. Early promotion for the album’s October release and a sleeve that’s seems to remembering Samantha Logic1000 Poulter’s (church) Confirmation? If so I have an equivalent photo but for a number of reasons it would never grace any recording of mine. 🙂

TRANCE WAX – Rhythm Of The Night (41 Rooms Remix) – Open Up The Night, 2LP – Armada – 2023

It’s in the artist name. Northern Ireland producer, Garry McCartney’s love of trance music over sixteen tracks, the first fifteen of which are definitely not for me… and to be fair, nor was the style in general the first time around! However, the album’s sixteenth and last track – even with a pants chorus! – is a gem in its understatement. There’s a sort of ‘naivety’ in the vocal that for some weird notion brought to mind (only mine, I can guarantee) WildCat (feat Denise Lee)’s Personal Reasons, an obscure 12″ from 1993 spun on an earlier 41 Rooms’ show, but along with the melody of the verses there’s more emotion here than spans the rest of the above album.

DAVID WOJNAROWICZ – Beautiful People * – Stream only – 1987-88.

The title track from a 1987 Super 8mm film short of the same name and a collaboration between ex-3 Teens Kill 4 members; mainman, Wojnarowicz and Jesse Hultberg, with the latter starring as a drag artist in New York. Wojnarowicz – a painter, photographer, writer, filmmaker, musician, performance artist, and political activist – passed away in 1992 but his collective work can be found here.

Being tagged a ‘conceptual art collective’ might go some way to explaining how the band managed to convince their label to simultaneously release radically different versions of the song over eight separate 7″ singles and in the mid ’90s I kept picking them up for 10-20p in Music & Video Exchanges’ Notting Hill shops. I gave up after five.

So, let’s here focus on this show’s version.

MEN I TRUST (feat GHOSTLY KISSES) – Again – Self-titled, LP – Return To Analog – 2017

Where an intro reeeeally sets the tone and the gentle vocals out of Canada were wrapped in a numbered-on-the-back, limited edition run of 333 vinyl copies for Record Store Day and the first 100 copies included a box of 8 crayons. Hard to know what ‘weight’ the crayons had for someone to pay €215 for a copy a few years back but the stark sleeve also fronts two other format variations that are less in numbers but also less in cost.

I vividly remember being much ‘bouyed’ when hearing this track for the first time – KISS FM, no doubt and I was obviously in need of a ‘lift’ – and maybe a couple of years earlier I also recall confidently dressed bass player, Andrew Levy strutting one time into a flat I was sharing in London’s Ladbroke Grove, looking to search out some suitable clothing my flatmate, shoe designer, Jess had amassed. Work in progress with the image.

THOMAS LEER – Who’s Fooling Who – Split 7″ flexi – Vinyl – 1983

Leer getting funky when coupled with the Cocteau Twins’ Speak No Evil on a (covering bases) 7″ flexi that came free with the Dutch magazine, Vinyl. Cut at 33rpm to get all of the five and half minutes of Who’s… on and sounding fine – a feat for a flexi, as they were rubbish – and chronologically, a track released post Leer’s Contradictions double 12″ and leading up to his classy 1985 album, The Scale Of Ten… where it could maybe have more happily sat.
